Industrial and Manufacturing Projects
Infineon Technologies; Henrico County, VA

The project was managed by Austin Commercial, Inc., from Austin, TX. F&R assisted in quality assurance for the project by providing construction materials testing and inspection services. F&R has staffed the job site with up to 12 trained engineering technicians, including two certified welding inspectors, in a single day. F&R also performed special inspections necessary for the scheduled occupancy of the administration building. In addition to the expected challenges that such an ambitious fast-track construction project presents, our field staff have successfully monitored multiple elevated and at-grade concrete placements, each exceeding 1,000 cubic yards and serviced by multiple concrete pumps. F&R coordinated our services with more than 20 on-site contractors, and assisted the contractors and owner in dealing with poor soil conditions generated by wet-weather construction, previous construction activity, and the local surface geology of the construction site. Our staff was available and on-call seven days a week, at all hours of the day and night, to assist the owner and contractors expeditiously to satisfy the project schedule.
Georgia Pacific; Various Locations

F&R currently performs extensive analytical testing on groundwater, wastewater and surface water for these three large wood processing locations in accordance with local, DEQ and federal regulations. Additionally, effluent monitoring is done on a monthly basis and groundwater at the onsite landfill is tested on a quarterly basis. F&R maintains a Quality Assurance Program designed to meet the requirements of regulatory agencies, client needs, and good laboratory practices. In this way the data is of known precision and accuracy. In addition, F&R is available for consulting on chemistry issues and out of the ordinary testing. The laboratory performed a large specialty project for product failure involving wood products that required method development. Working closely with the client representatives to achieve the goals outlined by the client is one of the hallmarks of the analytical testing laboratory.
Hershey’s Chocolate of Virginia; Stuart’s Draft, VA

The manufacturing facility in Stuarts Draft is the second largest chocolate manufacturing facility in the United States, and F&R provided the subsurface drilling, geotechnical engineering, and foundation recommendations services for the original manufacturing plant, as well as the construction materials testing and inspection services for subsequent additions. F&R performed field and laboratory testing and inspection services in the disciplines of soils, cast-in-place, reinforcing steel, masonry, fire-resistive materials and structural steel to monitor the compliance of construction methods and construction materials with the contract documents and the applicable building codes.
Cherokee-Spartanburg Industrial Park; Cherokee County, SC

F&R provided geotechnical exploration and consulting for the proposed 500-acre Cherokee-Spartanburg Industrial Park. The project site is currently a peach orchard and is situated north of Interstate I-85 at the Spartanburg/Cherokee County line. F&R was retained to perform a pavement evaluation for the proposed 2,200 foot road that will provide access to the various industrial park tracts. A series of three dam ponds are located on the site and they primarily collected surface run-off from the subject site and surrounding sites to the north. F&R was retained to perform borings through the three pond embankments to provide a cursory assessment of the materials used to construct the dams.
General Services Facility; Merck Company, Inc.; Elkton, VA

F&R performed subsurface drilling, geotechnical engineering, soil analysis, foundation recommendations, and construction materials testing and inspection services. Services were provided on asphalt, soils, cast-in-place concrete, masonry, reinforcing steel, structural steel, sprayed on fireproofing, etc. Random and selected services were provided to monitor concrete, concrete masonry units (CMU), and structural steel in accordance with the requirements of BOCA 1705, “Special Inspections”. All disciplines were monitored in the field to verify that construction materials and construction methods complied with the requirements of the contract documents, applicable building codes such as ACI 318, ACI 530.1, AWS D1.1, and BOCA 1705. F&R continues to provide monthly NDT services at the facility.
