Special Inspections Projects

Roanoke County Public Schools, Roanoke, VA

The Hidden Valley High School project was a two- to three-story steel frame, masonry facility that had a construction cost of approximately $38 million.  F&R performed construction materials testing and inspection services on the base aggregates, cast-in-place concrete, reinforcing steel, structural steel, metal decking, concrete masonry units, mortars and grout.  F&R monitored construction materials and construction methods for compliance with the contract documents, applicable building codes, and BOCA 1705 special inspections.

Gateway Medical Office Building, Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, VA

F&R has performed construction materials testing and special inspections services for the owner’s representative, Hammes Company, and these services have consisted of caisson inspection, soils, concrete, structural steel and fireproofing to monitor compliance with contract documents and building codes.  The Gateway project consisted of a nine-story -- approximately 200,000 square foot – expansion of the MCV Hospital.  The project was challenging due to the complexity of the construction and the tight site constraints between several buildings.  Due to excavation depths in excess of 20 feet to reach the basement elevation of the new building and extremely wet soil conditions, F&R assisted the contractor and owner in recommendations for dewatering of the excavation and stabilization of the subgrade soils.  Due to the relatively small footprint of the building and the accelerated project schedule, the steel erection and fireproofing proceeded on a compressed time frame, and our inspectors worked with the contractor to satisfy project specifications and maintain the schedule.

Wake County Public Schools; Raleigh, NC

Since the early 1970s, F&R has provided geotechnical engineering and CMT services for over 40 WCPSS projects ranging from renovations and additions to existing structures, to the construction of new three-story schools.  Above and beyond foundation design and subsurface related issues, our geotechnical engineers have provided recommendations for the economic use of on-site resources ranging from the blast rock fills, to recycled construction materials to help reduce construction costs.  Our diversified technical capabilities range from the standard soils and concrete testing, to welder certification and structural steel inspection, to analysis of 75-year old mortars for correct match of consistency and strength when adding onto historical structures.  For several years, F&R has also worked closely with the WCPSS Environmental Health and Safety Department to identify and remediate a variety of environmental hazards.  F&R has provided our consulting expertise on asbestos abatement projects, lead-based paint identification and remediation projects, hazardous materials assessment and clean-up, and evaluation of indoor air quality.  F&R has remained flexible and adaptable by assisting the EHS department with environmental concerns associated with both occupied and vacant facilities, tight vacation and holiday work schedules, and major renovation or demolition projects.

The Marriott Hotel, Baltimore, MD

F&R provided a subsurface exploration, geotechnical analysis, and construction materials testing for the foundation system of the hotel and adjoining parking garage.  The foundation system consisted of auger cast in-place piles for which F&R provided comprehensive site inspection and materials testing during installation.  Additionally, F&R engineers, metals/NDT inspectors, and engineering technicians performed the testing/inspection procedures on deep confined-space caissons, earthwork, asphalt, concrete, masonry, structural steel, and fire resistive materials to monitor compliance with contract documents and building codes.  F&R engineers also supervised the installation of 153 deep cast piles in a complex, fast paced environment.

Infineon Technologies; Henrico County, VA

F&R assisted in quality assurance for the project by providing construction materials testing and inspection services.  F&R was able to staff the job site with up to 12 trained engineering technicians, including two certified welding inspectors, each day.  F&R also performed special inspections necessary for the scheduled occupancy of the administration building.  In addition to the expected challenges that such an ambitious fast-track construction project presented, our field staff successfully monitored multiple elevated and at-grade concrete placements, each exceeding 1,000 cubic yards and serviced by multiple concrete pumps.  F&R coordinated our services with more than 20 on-site contractors, and assisted the contractors and owner in dealing with poor soil conditions generated by wet-weather construction, previous construction activity, and the local surface geology of the construction site.  Our staff was available and on-call seven days a week, at all hours of the day and night, to assist the owner and contractors satisfy the project schedule.

General Services Facility; Merck Company, Inc.; Elkton, VA

F&R performed a wide range of services encompassing subsurface drilling, geotechnical engineering, soil analysis, foundation recommendations, and construction materials testing and inspection.  Services were provided on asphalt, soils, cast-in-place concrete, masonry, reinforcing steel, structural steel, sprayed on fireproofing, and other construction materials.  Random and selected services were provided to monitor concrete, concrete masonry units, and structural steel in accordance with special inspections requirements.  All disciplines were monitored in the field to verify that construction materials and construction methods complied with the requirements of the contract documents, applicable building codes such as ACI 318, ACI 530.1, AWS D1.1, and BOCA 1705.  F&R continues to provide monthly NDT services at the facility.

Anne Arundel Medical Center; Annapolis, MD

F&R provided geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing, and third party inspections for the Anne Arundel Medical Center East and West campuses and adjoining parking garage. During construction, F&R provided construction materials testing and special inspections for the foundations systems including drainage and waterproofing, reinforcing steel, concrete framework and bracing, firestop and fireproofing systems, and structural steel and framing systems.
