Metals/NDT Projects
The Marriott Hotel, Baltimore, MD

F&R provided a subsurface exploration, geotechnical analysis, and construction materials testing for the foundation system of the hotel and adjoining parking garage. The foundation system consisted of auger cast in-place piles for which F&R provided comprehensive site inspection and materials testing during installation. Additionally, F&R engineers, metals/NDT inspectors, and engineering technicians performed the testing/inspection procedures on deep confined-space caissons, earthwork, asphalt, concrete, masonry, structural steel, and fire resistive materials to monitor compliance with contract documents and building codes. F&R engineers also supervised the installation of 153 deep cast piles in a complex, fast paced environment.
Harbor View, Baltimore, MD

F&R provided geotechnical drilling services in a complex marine environment. Drilling required a complex strategy that involved drilling through submerged piers, old wood pilings and 60-80 feet of coastal plain deposits onto weathered Baltimore gneiss. Additionally F&R engineers, metals/NDT staffers, and engineering technicians performed the testing/inspection procedures on caissons, earthwork, asphalt, concrete, masonry, structural steel, and fire resistive materials to monitor compliance with contract documents and building codes.
Infineon Technologies; Henrico County, VA

F&R assisted in quality assurance for the project by providing construction materials testing and inspection services. F&R was able to staff the job site with up to 12 trained engineering technicians, including two certified welding inspectors, each day. F&R also performed special inspections necessary for the scheduled occupancy of the administration building. In addition to the expected challenges that such an ambitious fast-track construction project presented, our field staff successfully monitored multiple elevated and at-grade concrete placements, each exceeding 1,000 cubic yards and serviced by multiple concrete pumps. F&R coordinated our services with more than 20 on-site contractors, and assisted the contractors and owner in dealing with poor soil conditions generated by wet-weather construction, previous construction activity, and the local surface geology of the construction site. Our staff was available and on-call seven days a week, at all hours of the day and night, to assist the owner and contractors satisfy the project schedule.
General Services Facility; Merck Company, Inc.; Elkton, VA

F&R performed a wide range of services encompassing subsurface drilling, geotechnical engineering, soil analysis, foundation recommendations, and construction materials testing and inspection. Services were provided on asphalt, soils, cast-in-place concrete, masonry, reinforcing steel, structural steel, sprayed on fireproofing, and other construction materials. Random and selected services were provided to monitor concrete, concrete masonry units, and structural steel in accordance with special inspections requirements. All disciplines were monitored in the field to verify that construction materials and construction methods complied with the requirements of the contract documents, applicable building codes such as ACI 318, ACI 530.1, AWS D1.1, and BOCA 1705. F&R continues to provide monthly NDT services at the facility.
Capital One; Richmond, VA

F&R performed construction materials testing services for phases I and II of the corporate campus of Capital One Services at the West Creek Industrial Park in Goochland County. Specifically, our services consisted of testing and inspection for concrete, masonry, structural steel and fireproofing. F&R is also serving as the Special Inspector of Record on the project. Phase I of the project consisted of the construction of two four-story buildings (160,000 square feet per building) with a connecting “knuckle” between the buildings, along with a Campus Services Building. Phase I was completed in the fall of 2001. Phase II consisted of three additional four-story buildings, a two-story Town Center (90,000 square feet), and two parking decks. The buildings are steel frame construction with brick exterior, and the parking decks are pre-cast construction. F&R had to coordinate testing services with several contractors on each building, as the construction has progressed simultaneously on several buildings.
Scott Stadium; University of VA; Charlottesville, VA

The goal of the project was to expand the existing stadium from approximately 44,000 seats to roughly 60,000 seats as well as improve other aspects of the stadium. F&R geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing and inspection services were utilized during the construction of the new scoreboard which required a deep foundation system. F&R also provided metals/NDT services via Level II Ultrasonic Technicians and Certified Welding Inspectors. In addition to visual inspection of all welds, ultrasonic examinations were performed of full penetration welds. The high strength bolted connections were also inspected for conformance to job specifications.
