Office Building Projects
Capital One; Goochland County, VA

F&R performed construction materials testing services for phases I and II of the corporate campus of Capital One Services at the West Creek Industrial Park in Goochland County. Specifically, our services consisted of testing and inspection for concrete, masonry, structural steel and fireproofing. F&R is also serving as the Special Inspector of Record on the project. Phase I of the project consisted of the construction of two four-story buildings (160,000 square feet per building) with a connecting “knuckle” between the buildings, along with a Campus Services Building. Phase I was completed in the fall of 2001. Phase II consisted of three additional four-story buildings, a two-story Town Center (90,000 square feet), and two parking decks. The buildings are steel frame construction with brick exterior, and the parking decks are pre-cast construction. F&R had to coordinate testing services with several contractors on each building, as the construction has progressed simultaneously on several buildings.
Howard County Government Office Complex; Ellicott, MD

F&R provided general descriptions of the subsurface soil conditions at the project site, provided foundation design and lateral earth pressure recommendations, and commented on geotechnical aspects of the proposed development. F&R executed a subsurface exploration program consisting of 83 standard penetration test borings drilled to depths from about 5 to 53.5 feet. Rock coring was performed using NQ2 tools upon encountering auger refusal within the proposed depth in only three test borings. Additionally, F&R performed laboratory soil classification, natural moisture content, modified Proctor, CBR, corrosivity tests and rock unconfined compression tests on selected samples. F&R evaluated the findings of the test borings and field and laboratory tests relative to shallow foundation support and other geotechnical aspects of the proposed project and provided appropriate design criteria.
Mecklenburg County Courthouse; Charlotte, NC

F&R provided preliminary geotechnical exploration, as well as limited chemical and environmental services for the proposed New Mecklenburg County Courthouse project. This project provided many unique challenges, which included night drilling, mobilization and demobilization adjacent to an existing structure (parking deck), variable rock conditions, and coordination with county and city government agencies. F&R’s chemical laboratory performed various analyses on water and soil samples. F&R’s environmental staff collected and ensured proper transportation of theses samples to the laboratory. EPA sampling guidelines was strictly adhered to and proper health and safety measures were followed. F&R continues to work on this project, providing geotechnical and environmental consulting.
Virginia State Capital Building; Richmond, VA

F&R industrial hygienists performed a limited hazardous materials survey at the State Capitol located in Richmond, VA. The building was surveyed for asbestos-containing materials, lead-based paint, PCB-containing light ballasts and mercury-containing components. F&R personnel performed these activities during the evening hours in order to avoid disrupting regular daily working activities.
Downtown Office Building; Hampton, VA

F&R conducted subsurface exploration and geotechnical engineering services as well as construction material testing services for this six floor, 120,000 square-foot building. The building consists of a structural steel building frame with a brick veneer and pre-cast concrete exterior supported by concrete pile foundations.
