Power Generation Projects
Carolina Power & Light; Richmond County, NC

CP&L’s $350+ million power generation plant sits on a 177-acre site south of Hamlet, NC, and at the time of its completion was considered to be one of the largest economic development projects in the state. F&R’s Fayetteville personnel provided on-site testing services including an on-site testing lab, soils and concrete testing, and structural steel inspections.
John S. Rainey Generating Station; Starr, SC

F&R provided the South Carolina Public Service Authority (aka Santee Cooper), with full-time field and laboratory testing services on the $350 million John S. Rainey Generating Station. F&R maintained a fully-equipped and calibrated laboratory on-site that provided our technicians the tools necessary to test soils and concrete efficiently and accurately. The project utilized of over 1 million cubic yards of earth and rock cut/fill and over 15,000 cubic yards of concrete, which F&R tested as subcontractors endeavored to piece together the various phases of the work.
Dominion VA Power Annual Environmental Contract; VA & Northern NC

F&R has an ongoing contract with Dominion Virginia Power to perform asbestos project monitoring in multiple substations across Virginia and northern North Carolina. In the substation buildings, the asbestos abatement contractor performs abatement activities involving the removal of transite panels above the electrical systems. The panels are broken into manageable pieces for removal utilizing a hammer, chisel and a HEPA vacuum cleaner. While this work is being performed, the asbestos abatement contractor uses spray bottles to wet the material and each of the buildings is under a negative pressure enclosure. F&R then conducts a visual inspection of each area. The asbestos abatement contractor then encapsulates each enclosure. After appropriate drying time, F&R performs aggressive PCM final clearance sampling.
Ultrasystems, Inc.; Franklin, Altavista, Hopewell, and Buena Vist
a, VA
F&R performed subsurface drilling operations, soils and rock analyses, and provided geotechnical engineering services and foundation recommendations on the four Virginia proposed sites for Ultrasystems, Incorporated. F&R also performed soil resistivity testing at all of the proposed sites and reported calculated resistivity, electrode spacing, and measured resistance along all traverse lines. The Virginia sites of Altavista, Franklin, and Hopewell were developed and cogeneration plants were constructed. F&R provided geotechnical engineering services and construction materials testing and inspection services during the construction phases. All construction materials and construction methods were observed to monitor compliance with the contract documents, ASTM and AASHTO standards, and the applicable building codes.
Carolina Power & Light Power Plant; Rowan County, NC

F&R provided construction materials testing services for the Carolina Power and Light’s power plant project in Rowan County, NC. F&R’s engineers and technicians were responsible for performing and reporting density testing on soils, and monitoring and sampling concrete for compressive strength testing at the jobsite. This project represents just one of the many jobs F&R has performed at various CP&L locations in the mid-Atlantic region.
