Welcome to F&R

Stadium and Athletic Projects

Cricket Arena; Charlotte, NC

F&R performed a subsurface investigation for a portion of the Cricket Arena’s existing concrete slab-on-grade bottom floor, in an area of slab distress/failure. This project involved accessing an area with low headroom conditions and coordinating our drilling activities to accommodate for time constraints posed by scheduled events.  In order to perform the requested geotechnical drilling, F&R utilized one of its skid-mounted CME-45 drill rigs.

The Diamond; Home of the Richmond Braves; Richmond, VA

F&R performed soil test borings for the City of Richmond. The test borings were made by means of drive sample borings, and the penetration resistance of the soil was determined by means of the standard penetration test at each change in the strata or at five-foot intervals, whichever occurred first. In the standard penetration test, a 140 pound hammer dropping 30 inches was used to drive a 2-inch O.D., 1.375-inch I.D, split-spoon sampler 18 inches into the soil. The results of the penetration tests were reported in three 6-inch increments, and the total of the last two 6-inch increments was the standard penetration resistance. Following the geotechnical investigation through the use of soil borings, F&R performed concrete and structural steel services at the stadium.

Ravens Stadium Baltimore, MD

F&R performed subsurface exploration for Ravens’ Stadium and environmental services for adjacent parking facilities in Baltimore, MD. Services included hazardous materials testing of soils, laboratory testing & engineering recommendations for the proposed stadium project. The stadium is a seven level 1.6 million square feet facility with a capacity is 69,084 including 8,196 club seats and 108 suites. The stadium design, with brick arches at its base and a superstructure of steel for the upper deck, complements Oriole Park at Camden Yards and reflects an industrial feel of the southern end of the site. The total design and construction process was completed in 30 months.

Atlantic Olympic Stadium; Atlanta, GA

F&R performed the structural steel inspection for the Olympic Stadium (presently Turner Field) in Atlanta. Our services consisted of visual inspection of the erection of the structural steel, along with specialized ultrasonic and other tests of the moment connections. The project proceeded on an accelerated schedule due to impending deadlines with the Olympic Games in 1996, and our services were required on an around the clock basis during the height of the construction. F&R's services were also critical towards the end of the construction as numerous design changes and last minute corrections had to be performed within the constraints of the original schedule.

Scott Stadium; University of VA; Charlottesville, VA

The goal of the project was to expand the existing stadium from approximately 44,000 seats to roughly 60,000 seats as well as improve other aspects of the stadium.  F&R geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing and inspection services were utilized during the construction of the new scoreboard which required a deep foundation system.  F&R also provided metals/NDT services via Level II Ultrasonic Technicians and Certified Welding Inspectors. In addition to visual inspection of all welds, ultrasonic examinations were performed of full penetration welds. The high strength bolted connections were also inspected for conformance to job specifications.
