This was a $312 million contract for design/build of collocated Military Department Investigative Agencies at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia. There was a very short timeframe on this project and we were able to mobilize three drill rigs within two weeks by coordinating activities with multiple branch offices.
F&R was retained to provide the geotechnical investigation and engineering analyses as well as materials testing for the project. The geotechnical exploration aspect of the project included 3,000 linear feet of drilling, 1,000 jar samples, 25 bulk samples, 7 Shelby tubes that was completed in 1-1/2 weeks. Laboratory analyses consisted of 4 direct shears, 4 consolidation tests, 1 lime mix design, 17 CBRs, 17 Proctors, and 47 classifications. Final geotechnical reports were issued within 2 months from notice to proceed.
The new 750,000sf facility was LEED® certified and included administrative space for each agency; technical service/surveillance countermeasures and ADP/operations lab; armory; instructional spaces; conference center, VTC rooms; public works/facility management spaces; graphics/printing and reproduction shop; equipment research area; record storage; vehicle loading/delivery areas; mailrooms; UPS system areas; watch center; IT center; classified shredder space; police station; gate guard houses with truck inspection and holding areas; military exchange retail service outlets; full service restaurant; physical fitness facility; child development center; and other specialized spaces. Extensive SCIF and raised flooring requirements were included throughout the facility.
