This project involved installing a 115 kV transmission line beneath the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River, west of the Port Covington area in the City of Baltimore, MD. The transmission line is proposed to be installed using horizontal directional drilling (HDD) methods at an approximate depth of 60 feet below the mudline, extending through firm to dense soils. Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) considered four potential crossing routes for the new transmission line.
F&R conducted the subsurface exploration program and geotechnical engineering analyses to support route selection and design. The exploration consisted of four barge-based soil test borings drilled to evaluate subsurface conditions along the potential HDD alignments. Laboratory services included visual classification and geotechnical testing of soil samples. Engineering evaluations assessed the suitability of subsurface conditions for the proposed HDD installation. The team presented the results and recommendations in a comprehensive geotechnical report for BGE.
