Our mission to protect people and property means we view sustainable building and environmental stewardship as fundamental responsibilities. With seven office locations throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed, this commitment carries even greater significance with projects that enhance the health of rivers, oceans, green spaces, and other ecosystems across our region and beyond.
“In the U.S., about 80% of the population lives within 350 miles of the coastline,” said Sam Proctor, F&R Owner and CEO. “As members of the design-build community, we have a responsibility to promote proper land management and environmental stewardship, especially where water and tides meet human infrastructure.”

We are proud of our work on local environmental education and sustainable building projects, including:
- Brock Environmental Center, Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF)
- Pauley Science Center, Hampden-Sydney College
- Rice Rivers Center, Virginia Commonwealth University
- Chesapeake Bay Hall, Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS)
- Eastern Shore Lab, VIMS
- James A. Buzzard River Education Center, James River Association
At F&R, our commitment extends beyond the workday. The F&R team proudly volunteers on environmental initiatives in our communities, joining CBF initiatives like Clean the Bay Day.

Earth Day was introduced in 1970 as a day of education and advocacy around air and water pollution. Since then, movements organized on Earth Day have led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and many environmental laws.
This year, we are thrilled to continue the Earth Day tradition of building environmental awareness by partnering with the CBF and its Volunteers as Chesapeake Stewards (VoiCeS) program. F&R will host a series of professional sessions on environmental and industry-related topics, including urban forestry, PFAS, and more. Check CBF’s VoiCeS page for additional info when it becomes available.
“F&R wants to set a good example with our peers in the AEC industry when it comes to environmental concerns,” said Mr. Proctor. “We need to use our expertise wherever possible to balance responsible land development with the health of the natural world around us. Our participation in the CBF VoiCeS program supports public access to information and helps our community stay informed about current developments and land management practices.”
Happy Earth Day!
